The Face In The Glass Poem To Help You Become Your Greatest Self
The Face In The Glass Poem To Help You Become Your Greatest Self
The Face In The Glass
When you get what you want in your struggle for pelf,
And the world makes you King for a day,
Then go to the mirror and look at yourself,
And see what that guy has to say.
For it isn’t your Father, or Mother or Wife,
Whose judgment upon you must pass.
The feller whose verdict counts most in your life
Is the guy staring back from the glass.
He’s the one to please, never mind all the rest,
For he’s with you clear up to the end.
And you’ve passed your most dangerous, difficult test
If the guy in the glass is your friend.
Some people might think you’re a straight-shootin’ chum
And call you a wonderful guy,
But the man in the glass says you’re only a bum
If you can’t look him straight in the eye.
You can fool the whole world down the pathway of years,
And get pats on the back as you pass,
But your final reward will be heartaches and tears
If you’ve cheated the guy in the glass.
~ Dale Wimbrow Sr.
(American Writer, Composer and Radio Artist, 1895-1954)
This poem isn’t the original one written in 1934. We changed it slightly to make it more suitable for today’s language.
According to the author’s son, Dale Wimbrow Jr., the original version was called “The Guy in the Glass,” which goes like this…
When you get what you want in your struggle for pelf,
And the world makes you King for a day,
Then go to the mirror and look at yourself,
And see what that guy has to say.
For it isn’t your Father, or Mother, or Wife,
Who judgement upon you must pass.
The feller whose verdict counts most in your life
Is the guy staring back from the glass.
He’s the feller to please, never mind all the rest,
For he’s with you clear up to the end,
And you’ve passed your most dangerous, difficult test
If the guy in the glass is your friend.
You may be like Jack Horner and “chisel” a plum,
And think you’re a wonderful guy,
But the man in the glass says you’re only a bum
If you can’t look him straight in the eye.
You can fool the whole world down the pathway of years,
And get pats on the back as you pass,
But your final reward will be heartaches and tears
If you’ve cheated the guy in the glass.

Action Steps
What went through your mind as you watched, listened to or read The Face In The Glass?
Have you been true to yourself?
If you’re like many of us, you probably haven’t been totally honest with yourself and have been living below your potential, right?
If so, you can change the situation around by living your life according to your values and beliefs.
Though this may not be possible at this time because there are things beyond your control, such as working in a job you don’t like or even hate.
We suggest you write down at least one thing about your work or life that you absolutely must improve or eliminate within the next 90 days and take the necessary actions to achieve it.
You may want to read The Face In The Glass aloud as you look in a mirror. While this may be hard to do if you haven’t been true to yourself, the insight you will gain from it could transform your life.
